"We live in a society where women and other marginalized bodies continue to persist despite the cards we have been dealt. We have no other choice than to exist."

Artist Statement

How to Use Your Playing Cards is a visual poem that aims to simulate how women in The Bahamas navigate their society with a proverbial deck of cards. For this poem, I drew upon personal experiences that I've had living as a Muslim Bahamian, an intersection of identity that has sometimes drawn ostracization and othering within the Bahamian social space. Though difference and diversity is normal within all societies, people who fall outside of the norms of the expected "good" Christian are not always treated kindly, but we continue to exist nonetheless. We live in a society where women and other marginalized bodies continue to persist despite the cards we have been dealt. We have no other choice than to exist.
